New Packaging legislation in California

What does the newest California Packaging legislation mean for your business?

The new packaging bill states that all packaging in the state of California must be recyclable or compostable by 2032 at the following levels:

  • At least 30 percent on and after January 1, 2028.
  • At least 40 percent on and after January 1, 2030.
  • At least 65 percent on and after January 1, 2032.

The newest legislation—US SB 54—signed by Governor Newsom in July of 2022 will result in an extended producer responsibility for printed paper and plastic packaging manufacturers. The bill aims to increase the producer’s responsibility for treating and disposing of post-consumer products and decrease single-use plastic packaging.

Now more than ever CPG manufacturers need to look for alternative raw materials for both primary and secondary packaging that will allow them to comply with the new law.
