Packaging Trends 2023
Earth Conscious consumerism is leading the beauty industry. Most of the brands that interacted with us during the show were seeking sustainable alternatives and looking to get ahead of upcoming environmental legislation affecting CPGs. In addition, skincare and beauty brands were not willing to sacrifice the look and feel of their boxes. Primary and secondary packaging are the first interaction that a consumer has with the brand and the goal for packaging experts was to find a substitute that wouldn’t compromise that experience. Luckily, with our Tree Free Upcycled Packaging (TFUP), sustainability never looked so good!
Tree Free Upcycled Packaging is the total package
We are proud to say we made a statement at Cosmopack with our Tree Free Upcycled Packaging. Attendees were able to see and feel the quality of our Earth Conscious paperboard, making their decision to switch to Tree Free Upcycled Packaging definite.
You can pair our Tree Free Upcycled Packaging (TFUP) with shinny or matte foils, add spot-UV or soft touch coatings for a unique feel or elevate your boxes’ look with multilevel embossings.
Answers to the Most Asked Questions Regarding TFUP
Is Tree Free Upcycled Paper similar to FSC-certified Paper? Tree Free Upcycled Paper does not have any wood fibers it is made of 100% sugarcane bagasse a by-product of sugar production, while FSC-certified paper is made of tree fibers sourced from FSC-managed forests.
What makes Tree Free Upcycled packaging better for the environment? Tree Free Upcycled Packaging is made of a by-product, Moquin Press gives these materials a second life by upcycling them into Tree Free Paperboard. Our Tree Free Upcycled Packaging doesn’t only reduce greenhouse emissions, but replacing wood fibers with bagasse reduces the carbon footprint associated with wood fibers.
Is there a big price markup in Tree Free Upcycled Packaging? Our mission is to help reduce the environmental impact of the products we manufacture which is why we have worked with our suppliers to keep Tree Free Upcycled Packaging in the same price range as our regular paper. We want to make sure every company has the opportunity to help us save our forests one box at a time.

Our choices
Moquin’s Tree Free UpCycled Paperboard was created with the “3Rs” in mind. Reduction and Upcycling are the most effective way to reduce waste.
The waste hierarchy on the right, is a set of priorities for the efficient use of resources, it prioritizes reduction, reuse, and recycling as essential to sustainable materials management. This framework advocates for a circular economy mindset that encourages manufacturers to choose repurposed or upCycled sources for our raw materials.
Using UpCycled Materials
Made from the by-product of sugar cane production, the fibrous material that remains after the sugarcane has been crushed to release its juice can be repurposed into paper pulp. Normally these by-products would be burned, contaminating the air with greenhouse gases. However, Moquin Press gives these materials a second life by upcycling them into Tree Free Paperboard.
Reduced Environmental Impact
Our Tree Free Upcycled Packaging doesn’t only reduce greenhouse emissions as explained above, but replacing wood fibers with bagasse reduces deforestation and the carbon footprint associated with this practice. Moreover, since we are using a byproduct of another industry we are completely eliminating the need to grow and plant crops solely for the purpose of making paper.
As a packaging manufacturer, we understand that the first steps toward sustainability and transforming your products to reduce your company’s environmental impact can be intimidating but Moquin Press can help you measure the environmental impact of switching to Tree Free UpCycled Packaging.

What does the newest California Packaging legislation mean for your business?
The new bill states that all packaging in the state of California must be recyclable or compostable by 2032 at the following levels:
- At least 30 percent on and after January 1, 2028.
- At least 40 percent on and after January 1, 2030.
- At least 65 percent on and after January 1, 2032.
The newest legislation—US SB 54—signed by Governor Newsom in July of 2022 will result in an extended producer responsibility for printed paper and plastic packaging manufacturers. The bill aims to increase the producer’s responsibility for treating and disposing of post-consumer products and decrease single-use plastic packaging.
Now more than ever CPG manufacturers need to look for alternative raw materials for both primary and secondary packaging that will allow them to comply with the new law.
Moquin Press has been ahead of the sustainability concerns in the packaging industry as the only packaging manufacturer in the United States that offers Tree Free paperboard made from the by-product of sugarcane production. Our Tree Free packaging is a great option to start your sustainability journey, made with sustainable inks and no dyes that could affect recyclability.
We aim to offer our clients the opportunity to prioritize telling their sustainability story through their packaging while complying with future earth-conscious legislation.

Byproducts of sugar production usually burned are instead turned into pulp and reused in the production of sugarcane paper. Sugarcane Tree Free Paper offers great quality working great with all of our Premium Finishes from spot UV to Foils.
Renewable & Compostable
Our tree free sugarcane paper is made 100% from renewable, biodegradable, and compostable materials. Sugarcane renews itself every 12 months and biodegrades in less than 90 days. Nonetheless, we recommend to recycle any packaging made with this paper like you would with any other paperboard so that it can be reused in post-consumer waste paper.
Reduced Emissions
Emissions are reduced in two ways:
First, by using the byproduct of sugar production, the bagasse of the sugarcane which would normally be burned is instead turned into pulp.
Second, no trees are felled or forests destroyed in the making of this paper, reducing deforestation and the carbon emission associated with this practice.
We are the only packaging manufacturer in the United States offering this eco-conscious option. Get in touch with us to learn more or click below to request a sample pack.
